  • When is the Cache Creek Nature Preserve open?
    The Jan T. Lowrey Cache Creek Nature Preserve is open from 7:00AM to 4:00PM Monday through Friday. It is also open from 9:00AM to 2:00PM during Open Days, which occur on the third Saturday of the month.

  • What does CCC stand for?
    CCC stands for Cache Creek Conservancy, a non-profit corporation dedicated to the restoration of the lower Cache Creek corridor from Capay to Yolo, California.

  • What does CCNP stand for?
    CCNP stands for Cache Creek Nature Preserve. In 2006 the name was modified to "The Jan T. Lowrey Cache Creek Nature Preserve. It is owned by the County of Yolo and managed by the Cache Creek Conservancy for wildlife habitat and educational programs.

  • What has CCC done in its existence?
    During its exhistance the Cache Creek Conservancy has implemented a wildlife habitat improvement project within a forty-acre abandoned mine pit, worked with local landowners on an experimental erosion control method using rice-straw bales and willows, initiated a Tamarix and Arundo donax removal and control demonstration project, developed a 130-acre property into the Cache Creek Nature Preserve, designed and implemented an interactive and engaging education program.

  • Can we birdwatch at the CCNP?
    Yes! Over 80 different species of birds have been sighted at the Preserve. Please call the staff if you would like to make special arrangements and for current sightings.

  • What animals besides birds are we likely to see?
    Depending on the season, the weather and the time of day, one can sight: muskrat, beaver, river otter, black-tailed deer, raccoon, jack rabbit, bobcat, hawks, owls, wetland birds, woodland birds, coyote and possibly oppossum. Often evidence of their presence can be detected, such as tracks, scat, gnawed trees and even odor!

  • When is the best time of year to visit CCNP?
    Every season offers a different perspective of native vegetation and wildlife. Come experience all four seasons at CCNP.

  • Can I bring my pets, even if they are on a leash? Can I launch my canoe?
    The Preserve is reserved primarily for wildlife. Because many of the areas on the Preserve are used as active breeding, resting, and feeding areas access is limited. In particular, the areas along the creek and in the wetland are rich habitat areas. Therefore, paddle craft launching is not allowed.

  • What is the charge to visit the CCNP?
    The Cache Creek Conservancy does not charge an entry fee.

  • Can I visit by myself?
    Yes, but please make a reservation by telephone ahead of time. Sue to limited staffing and other visiting groups it is asked that you call ahead to make sure that your visit is as enjoyable as possible. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

  • Are you open on holiday weekends?
    Due to limited staff availability the CCNP is not open during holidays.

  • How can I become a volunteer with the Cache Creek Conservancy?
    There are many volunteer opportunities to choose from. Whether you prefer to create an exhibit in the visitor center, build owl boxes, lead educational stations for visiting groups, monitor nesting boxes, or help maintain trails you are welcome.
