MISSION STATEMENT
I. Background
The citizens of Yolo County acknowledge that Cache Creek is a valued resource. Past activities, including agriculture, mining, groundwater extraction, damming, irrigation discharge, other infrastructure development, and construction along the creek have modified its wildlife habitat values. With the Cache Creek Resource Management Plan approved by the Board of Supervisors there is now an opportunity for a coordinated response to revitalize the riparian habitat along Cache Creek. The Cache Creek Conservancy has been created to be a focal point for accomplishing many of the habitat projects identified in the Management Plan.
II. Mission
The Cache Creek Conservancy's mission is to promote the restoration, enhancement and prudent management of the stream environment along Cache Creek from Capay Dam to the Settling Basin.
III. Implementation
The objectives of the Cache Creek Conservancy are to:
- Receive and manage donations and conservation easements that facilitate restoration and enhancement of wildlife habitat within the Cache Creek Conservancy area.
- Create a plan with the specific projects and actions for restoration, enhancement, and management of wildlife habitat within the focus area that is consistent with the goals of the Cache Creek Resource Management Plan.
- Promote broad-based community support for enhancement, restoration, and wise management of the creek ecosystem within the focus area through the development of outreach materials such as brochures, slide shows, a speakers bureau, etc.
- Solicit funding and volunteer support from a variety of sources to accomplish the mission of the Cache Creek Conservancy.
- Implement projects as funding, volunteer resources and landowner cooperation allows. Enter into conservation easement contracts as needed. Provide management and oversight of projects as necessary.
- Promote communication among the many groups interested in the management of Cache Creek by publishing a newsletter periodically that summarizes planning efforts, educational programs, habitat restoration projects, and other issues of interest.
- Provide opportunities for environmental education along Cache Creek and develop appropriate educational materials as funding is available.
- Encourage the development of baseline scientific information about the natural resources of Cache Creek.
IV. Organizational Structure
- The Cache Creek Conservancy is organized as a independent, nonprofit corporation meeting the requirements of Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). The Conservancy Board of Directors represents a range of interests, professional skills and affiliations, including agriculture, public agencies, private conservation organizations, the aggregate industry, and others.
- Day to day activities of the Cache Creek Conservancy are managed by an executive director.
- Educational activities are managed by an Education Coordinator.
V. Funding
- The Cache Creek Conservancy derives funding from a voluntary $0.05 per ton contribution based on tonnage of gravel sold and is paid by various aggregate producers on Cache Creek. To date the voluntary contribution has been agreed to by Granite Construction, Solano Concrete, Syar Industries and Teichert Aggregates.
- Additional funding from grants, in-kind services and goods, and other fund raising activities will be pursued.
- The Cache Creek Conservancy will create an endowment that eventually will constitute a major source of funding for the Conservancy.
